Charles Dickens, born in Portsmouth in 1812, was the well-loved British author of countless literary classics including Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations. Dickens died suddenly in 1870 leaving his final novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, unfinished. Although a kind-hearted and upright man, Dickens was brilliantly weird, advocating Hypnotism, keeping a pet Raven who he had stuffed when it died, keenly attending paranormal investigation "ghost clubs" in London, and having to sleep with his head pointing north every night owing to his OCD!
